Elephant Festival draws a significance of the endangered Asian elephants which has an essential part of Lao people’s heritage, culture, agriculture and livelihood.
Laos is the “country of million elephants”; therefore, there is a unique festival to honor this national mascot named as Elephant Festival. This festival has existed since 2006 and promoted by ElefantAsia – an NGO working and protecting this endangered animals in Laos.
Elephant festival is organized annually in Xayaboury province to raise awareness of the need for action to protect the Asian elephant as part of the vital cultural and natural heritage of Laos and the countries of the region.
The Festival has become an annual community-based activity in Laos with the active participation of public. During the festival, there are frenetic elephant processions, elephant bathing, elephant baci ceremonies and mahout demonstration. It is exactly a party of giant and friendly elephants – the loyal and truthful friend of Laotians. In the Festival, there are colorful and frenetic performances of both domestic and foreign artists, night markets and traditional games. The most special activity of Festival is “Elephant of the Year” contest which the competition of more than 60 elephants.
Elephant Festival is absolutely the most characterized festival of Laos – the land of elephant. Thanks to this festival, ancient cultural values are maintained and developed. The Festival is such a great time to raise awareness of protecting this endangered animal.
